The Occupational Safety and Health Administration unveiled a new web tool to help users determine whether injuries and illnesses are work-related and recordable under OSHA regulations. For point of reference it’s a legal requirement & a business imperative to properly maintain proper OSHA Logs that record employer related injuries. The fines and investigative hardships your business would endure for out strips the 20 minutes to properly record the case. That said the majority of small business owners are in direct violation of the law, setting themselves up for a substantial net income loss should OSHA come knocking. First question they ask,” Let me see your OSHA Log”.

The OSHA Tool simulates the interaction that an employer would have with an actual rules expert. It relies on the users’ responses to preset questions and automatically adapts to the situation. All responses are confidential and the system does not record or store any of the information. This new tool will help employers determine the following:

  • Whether an injury or illness is work-related
  • Whether an event or exposure at home or on travel is work-related
  • Whether an exception applies to the injury or illness
  • Whether a work-related injury or illness needs to be recorded
  • Which provisions of the regulations apply when recording a work-related injury or illness

OSHA’s Injury and Illness Recordkeeping page links to this helpful tool along with other materials to help employers comply with Federal record keeping and reporting requirements. It is also in a series of “Elaws” developed to help workers understand federal employment laws. The full list of Elaws can be found here.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA’s role is to assure these conditions for workers by setting and enforcing rules, and providing training, education and assistance. For more information, visit http://www.osha.gov.
