There is a new rule regarding NYC Day care QR code. New York’s City Council unanimously passed a bill recently that requires every city agency that has inspection, permit, license or registration information online to post a QR code linking to it. Think construction (Department of Buildings) Restaurants, Daycares, etc. The bill will become effective in fall 2013. Although the DOB is already including the codes on their permits.

This is another step towards the goal of open data in NYC, and will allow the consumer to be better informed. The law is designed to work in tandem with a law that requires city agencies to have all public data online by 2016. Consumers will use popular smartphone apps to scan the code and be taken to all available public data online. Here is some of the data that will be available with a quick scan of a QR Code:

Day Care Centers: The Department of Health currently lists all the day care centers it certifies on its website. There, parents can find information on violations as well as inspections.

Construction sites: Already in place, scanning a building permit QR code gives the details of the permit as well as any complaints and violations issued against the project.

Restaurants: In addition to the letter grade, the webpage would give the number of times the eatery has been inspected and all the details about past violations.

Additional agencies will also begin adding QR codes to permits and other official documents as they begin to include the relevant data online and the codes can be properly linked.

Let this serve as a warning that soon enough not only will your violations and incidents affect your insurance premiums, but they will affect how you are viewed by consumers who will have access to data that was previously hidden.
